“Hello lovers, brothers, sisters, newlyweds, divorcees from sea to shining sea”.

So begann die 27. Ausgabe der Bruce Springsteen Radioshow “From My Home To Yours”. Bruce Springsteen begrüsste am 1. September 2021 alle Liebenden, Brüder, Schwestern, Jungvermählte sowie Geschiedene und gab bekannt, dass sich die aktuelle Episode der Sirius XM Show mit dem Thema “Going To The Chapel” (Zur Kapelle gehen) beschäftigen wird.

Der “Boss” sprach über die Liebe und die Ehe und spielte als ersten Song den Chuck Berry Klassiker “You Never Can Tell” aus dem Jahre 1964. Der anno 1926 in St. Louis, MI geborene Chuck Berry komponierte dieses Lied im Gefängnis und erzählte die Geschichte eines jungen Liebespaares auf ihrem Weg ins Erwachsenenalter.

Bruce Springsteen lobte das Genie von Chuck Berry und merkte an, dass er ein “grosser amerikanischer Geschichtenerzähler war und mein Mark Twain der Rockmusik”. Danach legte er die Singles “Gonna Get Married” von Major Lance, “I’m Gonna Get Married” (Lloyd Price) und “Chapel of Love” der Dixie Cups auf und berichtete folgendes:

“One of the most classic wedding songs of all time: “Chapel of Love.” Written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector, originally recorded by Darlene Love! But turned into a hit that spent three weeks at Number 1 by the Dixie Cups in 1964 — knocking The Beatles out of the top chart spot, and that wasn’t easy to do”.

Auch die Springsteen Eigenkomposition “I Wanna Marry You” durfte während der sechzig abwechslungsreichen Sendeminuten nicht fehlen. Bruce Springsteen wählte eine Live-Version aus dem Jahre 2016 aus und sagte:

“I wrote this song as a daydream — you know, you’re standing on the corner, watching someone you’ll never meet walk by, and you’re imagining an entire life with this person! What it would be like, what are your kids are gonna look like, where you’re gonna live… happiness, happiness, happiness! Of course, the life you’re imagining is the one without consequences. You know that one — it doesn’t exist! But hey, this is a song of beauty! Of imagining love, in all of it’s glory. The excitement, and its tentativeness. It’s not the real thing… but I had to start someplace.

That was “I Wanna Marry You,” written for The River, in a Ben E. King-via-Manfred Mann’s Paul Jones vocal style, borrowing a little soul, mixing it with a little doo-wop, and sequenced on the album just before “The River.” It was meant to rub against “The River” and highlight the contradictions of the two songs and of marriage itself. One a utopian dream, and one, social realism. They create a tension and a conflict that was at the center of The River album — really the first album where I wrote about relationships between men and women”.

Die Ehe hat auch seine Schattenseiten. Nach der grossen Liebe und einem Eheversprechen auf Lebenszeit, folgt oft eine bittere Scheidung. Bruce Springsteen wählte dazu den Difters Track “Mexican Divorce”, Bob Dylans “I Threw It All Away” und “The Married Men” der Roches aus und gab folgendes zu Protokoll:

“‘The Married Men’ is one of a kind. There is no other song dealing with the ins and outs, complications of marriage, anything like that one. Great song, I believe written by Maggie Roche if I am correct, I’m not sure about that. But they were incredible songwriters and an amazing vocal group, really the kind of vocals that can only come from blood. The Beach Boys have it also, of course; the Everly Brothers had it also, of course; it’s just a unique feature of genetics, the way those voices blend”.

Im Anschluss stellte Bruce Springsteen etliche Country Songs vor, die sich mit Liebe, Hochzeiten und Scheidungen beschäftigen. Unter anderem präsentierte er “On The Other Hand” aus der Feder von Paul Overstreet und Don Schlitz. Besagter Song wurde im Juli 1985 von Randy Travis aufgenommen und erreichte Platz 1 der “Billboard US Hot Country Songs”.

“Randy Travis – Singer of 16 Number 1 singles on the Billboard Country charts. He was born in Marshville, North Carolina, had a bit of a troubled youth — and adulthood — but generally mended his ways and dedicated himself to his music. And it’s just one of the loveliest voices of a certain party of Country that was somewhat post-traditional and yet certainly pre- the modern Country that we hear today”.

Den Abschluss der 27. Sendung machte Elvis Presley mit “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. Bruce Springsteen erinnerte sich, dass er diesen Klassiker im Rahmen der “Tunnel of Love Express Tour” oft gecovert hat.

Anschliessend verabschiedete er sich mit den Worten “I want you to stay hard, stay hungry, stay alive… and stay in love. Go in peace”.

In der 28. Ausgabe des SIRIUS XM Radioformats “From My Home To Yours” sprach Bruce Springsteen über das liebe Geld.

Die Show stand unter dem Motto “Money Honey” und Bruce begrüsste die Zuhörer am 15. September 2021 mit “Hello gamblers, ramblers, friends, famly, hustlers and rustlers – welcome to Volume 28 of From My Home to Yours, titled Money Honey”.

Passenderweise eröffnete er die Sendung mit Wanda Jacksons “Money Honey” – einem Contrysong aus dem Jahre 1958. Diese Komposition stammt aus der Feder des bekannten Rhythm and Blues Musikers Jesse Stone, der unter anderem etliche Hits für die Drifters, Ray Charley und Bill Haley schrieb. Bruce Springsteen bezeichnete die mittlerweile 83jährige Künstlerin als “First Lady of Rockabilly” und gab bekannt, dass er das grosse Glück hatte, Wanda Jackson in Asbury Park persönlich zu treffen.

Bruce Springsteen über Wanda Jackson:

“She had every bit of what she’s always had: that premier female voice of rockabilly. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009; she is a native Oklahoman; she retired from performance in 2019, and she will be missed. She was as wonderfully down-home and sassy as that voice always made her sound. Wanda, wherever you are tonight, we love you”.

Wanda Jackson veröffentlichte im vergangenen Monat ihr 36. Studioalbum “Encore”. Das Werk wurde von Joan Jett produziert und enthält Duette mit Joan Jett, Elle King, Angaleena Presley (Pistol Annies) und Candi Carpenter.

Nach Wanda Jackson folgt mit “Money on Straight” (Album: Wonderful Wonderful) ein Song der Killers und “Mr. Dollar” von Wynonie Harris. Harris erblickte anno 1915 im ländlichen Omaha das Licht der Welt und schrieb es sich bereits in jungen Jahren auf die Fahnen, in den Clubs von Chicago als Sänger aufzutreten. Mit 32 Jahren kam er bei “King Records” unter Vertrag und schaffte es, den R&B Gassenhauer “Good Rockin’ Tonight” auf Platz 1 der Billboard Charts zu platzieren.

Bruce Springsteen über Wynonie Harris:

“Wynonie Harris was known for his blues-shoutin’ voice, ribald lyrics, and his rhythm-and-blues songs with titles such as, “Lollipop Mama”, “I Like My Baby’s Pudding”, “Sittin’ on It All the Time”, “Keep on Churnin’ (Till the Butter Comes)” and “Wasn’t That Good”.

Im weiteren Verlauf der knapp 70minütigen Sendung spielte Bruce Springsteen nicht nur ältere, sondern auch neuere Songs. Unter anderem “Rich Man” der New Yorker Indie Band “Vampire Weekend” oder “Money” von Cardi B. Nebenher erzählte der “Boss” immer wieder Geschichten und lies es sich nicht nehmen, Donald Trump scharf zu kritisieren.

“As a child, I took lessons at Mike Diehl’s music school on South Street. Mr. Diehl had a lovely little school — nothing too big, came out of a small, ’50s-style ranch house — and made a nice living there.
Some years later… Donald Trump is building one of his damn casinos down in Atlantic City. Orders a bunch of pianos from my friend Mr. Diehl and then, of course, refuses to pay for them.
Now, for Mr. Diehl, hundreds of thousands of dollars in pianos is a lot of fucking pianos, and a lot of fucking money. And that this bastard held out on this small-town music-school owner, and finally agreed to pay him something like six on the dollar, was disgusting. And it really hurt Mr. Diehl at the time. That was basically his… that was the money that he made for the entire year.
So. I’m gonna dedicate this one to that fucker that’s sittin’ down in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, right now, sucking on his shrimp scampi and lyin’ to the rest of the nation.
He’s just a goddamn money grabber”.

Natürlich legte der “Boss” mit “Easy Money” auch eine Eigenkomposition auf. Das Lied findet man auf auf seinem 17. Studioalbum “Wrecking Ball” und Bruce erinnerte sich, dass es das erste Lied war, welches er für “Wrecking Ball” schrieb.

Bruce Springsteen über “Easy Money”:

“Behind the wheel, just started hummin’ that along. Suddenly I said, “I got it!” I dashed in my wheels to the studio! Called my crew! And threw down a rough version of that tune. And I wrote the rest of it that night on the edge of my bed, and I recorded it the next day. I like it when they happen like that. It was my diatribe against all them Wall Street suckers, grabbin’ all that easy money after that 2008 crash, without givin’ a fuck about what happened to everybody else”.

Nach etlichen “neueren” Songs kehrte Springsteen in die 1960er Jahre zurück und präsentierte die Blues Klassiker “Dead Presidents” von Little Walter und “I’m Your Bread Maker Baby” von Slim Harpo. Ferner erzählte er eine Geschichte über das “Pleite Sein” und berichtete, dass er in den frühen 1970er Jahre nach New York City fahren und sich 30 Dollar von seinem damaligen Manager Mike Appel leihen wollte:

“I once drove to New York City in the early ’70s in hopes of getting 30 dollars — to keep me from getting thrown out of my apartment in Asbury Park. It was too late, but I was going to get this 30 dollars from Mike Appel, my then-manager; when I got to the Lincoln Tunnel, the kind lady wouldn’t let me through, because after she busted open my last roll of 100 pennies — the last money I had on the planet — she found one Canadian penny!
And 99 cents, my friend, will not get you into New York City! In the day, you needed a full dollar or you’re turnin’ around! And that’s exactly what she told me to do! “Turn this car around, sir, you don’t have a dollar.”
So I got out of that car, with a cacophony of horns blarin’ behind me for the bullshit that was going on where I was, and I searched that car inside and out. I took my time until I found, somewhere ‘neath the back seat, one American cent. And I took it between my thumb and my finger, and I dropped it into her hand, and she slapped it down on that metal desk. New York was mine! I had the dollar.
But damn, that was broke”.

Bruce Springsteen beendete die Show mit folgenden Worten: “That’s our show for today, folks. Til we meet again, I wish you health, wealth, good fortune, and good times. Go in peace” und spielte als krönenden Abschluss die Clarence Clemons Single “Savin’ Up” aus dem Jahre 1983.

Am 13. Oktober 2021 lief die 29. Ausgabe des erfolgreichen SIRIUS XM Radioformats „From My Home To Yours“.

Die Show begann mit dem Tony Alvon Klassiker „Sexy Coffee Pot“ aus dem Jahre 1969 und Bruce Springsteen gab den Zuhörern zu verstehen, dass er heute ausschliesslich über Sex reden möchte. Um seiner Aussage Nachdruck zu verleihen, legte er als zweiten Song den Salt-N-Pepa Millionenseller „Let’s Talk About Sex“ auf und erinnerte, dass jeder Mensch Liebe machen sollte.

„Pep, I don’t think they’re gonna play this on the radio. And why not? Everybody havin‘ sex. I mean, everybody should be makin‘ love. Come on, how many guys you know make love?“

Salt-N-Pepas Erfolgssingle „Let’s Talk About Sex“ wurde von Herby Azor geschrieben und im August 1991 released. Der Song erzählt von Safer Sex und richtet sich gegen die Zensur des Themas in den amerikanischen Medien zu dieser Zeit. Unter anderem erreichte die Single Platz 1 der Hitparaden in Deutschland, Österreich, Belgien, Portugal, den Niederlanden und der Schweiz. Ferner wurde „Let’s Talk About Sex“ in Grossbritannien auf Rang 2 sowie auf Platz 13 der amerikanischen Billboard Charts gelistet und von der „Recording Industry Association of America“ mit einer goldenen Schallplatte bedacht.

Bruce Springsteen kam während der Sendung auch auf Hank Ballard zu sprechen und erzählte, dass der aus Detroit, MI stammende Musiker in den 1950er Jahren „Work with Me, Annie“ veröffentliche. Wegen sexueller Anspielungen schritt die „Federal Communications Commission“ (FCC) ein und versuchte, den Verkauf der Vinyl Platte einzuschränken. Trotzdem wurde „Work with Me, Annie“ ein grosser Erfolg und schoss auf Platz 1 der landesweiten R&B Charts, um dort für sieben Wochen zu verweilen.

Im Anschluss spielte Springsteen „Annie Had A Baby“ der Medallions und „Honky Tonk Women“ der Rolling Stones. Bruce nahm diesen Song zum Anlass, um an den Tod von Charlie Watts am 24. August 2021 zu erinnern.

„Rest in peace, Charlie Watts. There is no better tribute to rock’s greatest rock ’n‘ roll drummer than the vicious groove he digs on ‚Honky Tonk Women.‘ ‚Whoooo,‘ Mick says at the end of the Stones masterpiece, and he is correct!“

Im weiteren Verlauf der abwechslungsreichen Show legte Springsteen mit „Reno“ eine Eigenkomposition auf. Der Song ist auf Bruce Springsteens dreizehntem Longplayer „Devils & Dust“ zu finden und beschreibt die sexuelle Begegnung eines Mannes mit einer Prostituierten.

Nach „Reno“ stellte Bruce Springsteen den im Jahre 1950 in Houston, TX geborenen Country Sänger und Produzenten Rodney Crowell vor. Ausserdem spielt er seinen Song „Sex & Gasoline“ und merkt an, dass Rodney Crowell einst in Emmylou Harris Band gespielt hat und ein grossartiger Künstler ist.

„Rodney Crowell, born in 1950, in Houston, Texas played in Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band, Another of the great line of singer-songwriters that Texas seems to produce unfailing. Great writer. Great artist.“

Bruce Springsteen beendet die 29 Ausgabe seiner „From My Home To Yours“ Sirius XM Sendung mit Donna Summer – der Königin der Discomusik – , dem viel zu früh verstorbenen Marvin Gaye und der Eigenkomposition „I’m On Fire“.

„Love to Love You Baby“ war ein Song, den Donna Summer im Mai 1975 in den legendären „Musicland Studios“ in München einspielte und mit Giordio Moroder abmischte. „Love to Love You Baby“ wurde im November 1975 weltweit veröffentlicht und verkaufte sich in den Vereinigten Staaten über 1 Million Mal.

„And we have bookended our program with another great record by Marvin Gaye, who without a doubt made some of the sexiest recordings of the ’70s… and that’s about our show for today. I hope you’ve enjoyed our time together, and until we meet again, may your life be filled with sex, love, and rock ’n‘ roll!“
