Bruce Springsteen
LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY

CD 1 - CD 2

  Tenth Avenue Freeze Out
Tear drops on the city
Bad Scooter searching for his groove
Seem like the whole world walking pretty
And you can't find the room to move
Well everybody better move over, that's all
I'm running on the bad side
And I got my back to the wall
Tenth Avenue freeze-out, Tenth Avenue freeze-out
I'm stranded in the jungle
Taking all the heat they was giving
The night is dark but the sidewalk's bright
And lined with the light of the living
From a tenement window a transistor blasts
Turn around the corner things got real quiet real fast
She hit me with a Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out
And I'm all alone, I'm all alone
And kid you better get the picture
And I'm on my own, I'm on my own

And I can't go home
When the change was made uptown
And the Big Man joined the band
From the coastline to the city
All the little pretties raise their hands
I'm gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When Scooter and the Big Man bust this city in half
With a Tenth Avenue freeze-out, Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out...

  Land of Hope and Dreams
Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
Don't know where you're goin'
Sky is turnin' black
Well darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave behind the rest

Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

Well, I will provide for you
Yeah, and I will stand by your side
You'll need a good companion, darlin'
For this part of the ride
You leave behind your sorrows
Yeah, this day at last
Tomorrow they'll be sunny skies
And all this darkness past

Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams

Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

This train
Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This Train
Carries whores and gamblers
This Train
Carries midnight ramblers
This Train
Carries broken-hearted
This Train
Carries souls departed
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Carries fools and kings
This Train
Hear the big wheels singing
This Train
Bells of freedom ringing

She says now on these streets Charles
You got to understand the rules
Promise me if an officer stops you'll allways be polite
Never ever run away and promise momma you'll keep your hands in sight

Cause is it a gun?
Is it a knife?
Is it a wallet?
This is your life
It ain't no secret
It ain't no secret
The secret my friend
You can get killed just for living in your American skin

41 shots
41 shots

Across this bloody river to the other side
41 shots they cut through the night
You're kneeling over his body in the vestibule
Praying for his life

Is it a gun?
Is it a knife?
Is it a wallet?
This is your life
It ain't no secret

  Lost in the Flood
The ragamuffin gunner is returnin' home like a hungry runaway
He walks through town all alone
He must be from the fort he hears the high school girls say
His countryside's burnin' with wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide
The hit and run, plead sanctuary, `neath a holy stone they hide
They're breakin' beams and crosses with a spastic's reelin' perfection
Nuns run bald through Vatican halls pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception
And everybody's wrecked on Main Street from drinking unholy blood
Sticker smiles sweet as gunner breathes deep, his ankles caked in mud

And I said "Hey gunner man that's quicksand, that's quicksand that ain't mud

Have you thrown your senses to the war or did you lose them in the flood?"
That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced
Races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight
He rides `er low on the hip, on the side he's got Bound For Glory in red,
white and blue flash paint
He leans on the hood telling racing stories, the kids call him Jimmy The
Saint
Well the blaze and noise boy, he's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin'
point
He rides head first into a hurricane and disappears into a point
And there's nothin' left but some blood where the body fell

That is, nothin' left that you could sell
Just junk all across the horizon, a real highwayman's farewell

And he said "Hey kid, you think that's oil? Man, that ain't oil that's blood"
I wonder what he was thinking when he hit that storm
Or was he just lost in the flood?
Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air
Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare
And Bronx's best apostle stands with his hand on his own hard ware
Everything stops, you hear five, quick shots, the cops come up for air
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street
And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose but he gets blown right off his feet

And some kid comes blastin' round the corner but a cop puts him right away

He lays on the street holding his leg screaming something in Spanish
Still breathing when I walked away
And somebody said "Hey man did you see that? His body hit the street with such
a beautiful thud"
I wonder what the dude was sayin' or was he just lost in the flood?
Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure messed up
I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?

  Born in the U.S.A.
Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up
Born in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A., born in the U.S.A.
Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man
Born in the U.S.A....
Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man said "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said "Son, don't you understand"
I had a brother at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone
He had a woman he loved in Saigon

I got a picture of him in her arms now
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go
Born in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A., I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A., Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A., I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.

  Don`t look Back
Cold rain running down the front of my shirt
I'm flat on my back wheels in the dirt
Angel makes her face up out on baker Street
She's straddlin; the shifter in my front seat
There's nothing to lose
It's a set-up (heartbreak)
The deck's stacked
So put your foot to the floor
And darling don't look back

Well making night tracks through the blazing rain
Blow them pistons, work (move) in the fast lane
White line burning, pockets full of cash
Angel writes her name in lipstick on my dash
There's nothing to lose
It's a set-up (except a heartbreak) (just a bad break)
The deck's stacked (baby we're back)
Tonight we'll blow off the doors (Put your foot to the floor)

And honey we won't look back (And darling don't look back)

We held it in our hearts in the pouring rain
We made it through the heart of a hurricane
We tore it apart and put it together again

We'll wash out sins, girl down in the sea
Angel won't you believe in love for me
(Come on meet me tonight darlin' out in the street)
We'll move with the city in the dark
You got to walk it talk it in your heart

There's nothin' to lose
It's a set-up (just a heartache)
The deck's stacked
So put your foot to the floor (and) darling
Tonight we'll blow out (off) the doors darling (baby)
Put your foot to the floor (we're gonna even the score)
And darling don't look back (honey we won't look back)
Don't look back
Ah, baby, don't look back

  Jungleland
The rangers had a homecoming in Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance and disappear down Flamingo Lane
Well the Maximum Lawman run down Flamingo chasing the Rat and the barefoot girl
And the kids round here look just like shadows always quiet, holding hands
>From the churches to the jails tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand down in Jungleland
The midnight gang's assembled and picked a rendezvous for the night

They'll meet `neath that giant Exxon sign that brings this fair city light

Man there's an opera out on the Turnpike
There's a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops, Cherry Tops, rips this holy night
The street's alive as secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they vanished unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switch-blades hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted explode into rock'n'roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street down in Jungleland
In the parking lot the visionaries dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing to the records that the D.J. plays
Lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on, just a look and a whisper, and they're gone

Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender in a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal and then surrender in the tunnels uptown
The Rat's own dream guns him down as shots echo down them hallways in the night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light
Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz
Between flesh and what's fantasy and the poets down here
Don't write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night they reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand but they wind up wounded, not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland

  Ramrod
Hey, little dolly with the blue jeans on
I wanna ramrod with you honey, till half- past dawn
Let your hair down sugar and pick up this beat
Come on and meet me tonight down on
Bluebird Street
I've been working all week, I'm up to my
neck in hock
Come Saturday night I let my ramrod rock
She's a hot stepping hemi with a four on the floor
She's a roadrunner engine in a '32 Ford
Late at night when I'm dead on the line
I swear I think of your pretty face when I
let her unwind
Well look over yonder see them city lights
Come on little dolly 'n' go ramroddin' tonight
Come on, come on, come on little baby
Come on, come on let's shake it tonight

Come on, come, come on little sugar

Dance with your daddy and we'll go
ramroddin' tonight
Hey, little dolly won't you say you will
Meet me tonight up on top of the hill
Well just a few miles cross the county line
There's a cute little chapel nestled down
in the pines
Say you'll be mine little girl I'll put my foot
to the floor
Give me the word now sugar, we'll go
ramroddin' forever more

  If I Should Fall Behind
We said we'd walk together baby come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we're walkin a hand should slip free
I'll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
We swore we'd travel darlin' side by side
We'd help each other stay in stride
But each lover's steps fall so differently
But I'll wait for you
And if I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now everyone dreams of a love lasting and true
But you and I know what this world can do
So let's make our steps clear that the other may see
And I'll wait for you
If I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now there's a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There 'neath the oak's bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees

I'll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
Darlin' I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me
